Hi Omni,
This week, we’re diving into one of my favorite chapters from “On Recording”, the Fast / Cheap / Good Triangle.
Author and engineer Chris Shlarb describes the triangle like this:
The axiom goes something like this:
Fast, Cheap, or Good.
Pick two.
If you want something fast and good, it won’t be cheap. If you want
something cheap and fast, it won’t be good. Good and cheap?
It won’t be fast.
I’ve always considered this phrase from the standpoint of the consumer, but today I want to explore how you can apply this axiom to your engineering and production services.
Many of us, when taking on new clients, get stuck trying to fulfill all three of our clients desires: to receive a quality product, immediately, and for very little compensation.
Chris reminds us that expecting all three is unrealistic. This has inspired me to re-evaluate my own consulting services. I know that I provide high quality services basically on-demand, so I have recently adjusted my pricing packages.
I’m still able to accommodate clients who aren’t able to pay the premium amount, but so far, most people have recognized that what I’m offering is worth the investment.
How about you, Omni? Are you trying to deliver quality services quickly? Is there a possibility that you’re not charging enough? Or perhaps you work slowly and may be asking too high of a rate?
Or maybe you’re running yourself ragged trying to meet your clients’ needs at a pace that causes your quality to suffer. Can you lower your rates and give yourself more time to complete a project?
What aspect of your business can you re-evaluate and improve upon - quality, time management, or pricing? Tell us in the comments… and be sure to snag your free copy of On Recording before April 30.
Love, Lisa

Awesome insight!
